Exam invigilation

Exam invigilation is a thought provoking task.
Most students concentrating while other wear a mask
as they gaze up at the ceiling wishing that they were elsewhere.
Lots work hard and try their best whilst others just don’t care.
I watch them and I wonder what their lives are like at home,
what robs them of ambitions for a future of their own?
The only motivation, for some of them it seems,
is being centre of attention with no thought for what it means;
No chance of passing exams, of progressing up the ladder.
An adult life unqualified, nothing could be sadder.
Some may succeed and be fulfilled but some will simply languish,
living hand to mouth on benefits, lives full of woe and anguish.
Oh for a time that’s yet to come, when kids will think it’s cool
to take responsibility and do their best at school.
